ASTEM Environmental, Inc. provides environmental monitoring services for our clients when soil investigation is required. Soil investigations can help determine the existence or source of possible contamination at a project. Our personnel is qualified to perform field soil analysis.
If necessary, ASTEM will collect and prepare soil samples for laboratory analysis at a state-certified environmental analytical laboratory.
Our team has extensive experiences retrieving soil samples from borings, excavations, and stockpiles.
We submit the samples to local laboratories for analysis and raw data reporting so we can then analyze the data and provide our clients with detailed reports and our professional recommendation for proceeding with their projects.
what can ASTEM do for you?
Soil samples are collected using a five-foot long Macrocore sampler with dedicated acetate liners advanced by a Geoprobe. Up to two samples per borehole/well are collected: one sample from the vadose zone soil interval with the highest PID reading, and one sample from just above the water table. If no impacts are detected in the vadose zone, then only the one sample from just above the water table is collected. The Macrocore samples are visually characterized by an ASTEM scientist and field screened for the presence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) using a photoionization detector (PID).
A photoionization detector or PID is a type of gas detector that measures volatile organic compounds and other gases. The PID is a detector for many gas and vapor analytes. It produces instantaneous readings and operate continuously. These hand-held, battery-operated detectors are widely used in military, industrial, and confined working facilities for safety.
PIDs are used as monitoring solutions for:
